Using Structural Insulated Panels in Non-Residential Structures

Using Structural Insulated Panels in Non-Residential Structures
Although often used in residential projects, Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are becoming more prevalent in some commercial structures, such as schools. Through proper communication between the Engineer-of-Record and the SIPSs Engineer, their incorporation into a project can provide access to a useful structural material that may otherwise not be considered.

-SIP construction is not necessarily more expensive than other construction methods for exterior walls of structures.

-SIP span charts and load tables are usually based upon testing, as opposed to material properties and calculations that drive other structural materials’ tables.

-Proper coordination between the Engineer-of-Record and the SIP Engineer leads to an efficient division of labor and prevents both excessive and inadequate cross-over of design effort.

-SIP structures can effectively serve as elements of a structure’s Lateral Force Resisting System.

-SIPs in walls often have continuous wood studs embedded in the ends of the panels that can serve as chords of shear walls.
